When I look at this I see the arch shapes as doorways. The architecture of the room, then, is too bizarre even for Escher. 
It's like if Escher followed Alice into Wonderland and was given LSD instead of food.
But... somehow this does not seem purely psychedelic. Perhaps it's all the black giving it a more somber mood?
